Effect of fruit restriction on glycemic regulation in patients with type 2 diabetes

Medical nutrition therapy is recognized as an important treatment option for type 2 diabetes. Most recommendations suggest consuming a diet with a high intake of fiber-rich foods, including fruit. Nonetheless, some health practitioners are concerned that the consumption of fruit has a detrimental effect on glycemic control and thus suggest restricting the consumption of fruit. We did not find any studies addressing this important clinical issue. A research population consisted of 63 men and women newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. All patients have completed the trial. The high fruit group increased the fruit intake by 125 grams (CI 95 per cent; 78 to 172) and the low fruit group decreased the intake by 51 grams (CI 95 per cent;-18 to −83) (Christensen et al. Nutrition Journal 2013, 12:29).
